NINE UPNISHADS
11. Those calm and learned persons who, subsisting on
aIms, live in forest (lonely places) with austerity and full faith
in God, free from all passions and vices, attain the Immortal
Unchangeable Supreme Soul, leaving their bodies through the
gate of the sun (i. e., through
Sushumna
vein).

12. Considering the performance of sacrificial and charita-
ble deeds as being conducive to short-lived worldly pleasures,
the wise, whose sole object is to attain God and supreme bliss,
should abstain from worldly pleasures and, considertng that
mere deeds do not lead to knowledge of God but that they can
attain Him by full devotion to Him, should go to a preceptor
well-versed in
vedas
and wholly devoted to God with
samidha
(fuel or a suitable present) in his hand, to acquire the know-
ledge of God.

13. That learned preceptor should impart the secret know-
ledge of God to such pupil approaching him and possessing a
calm and steady mind, so that the latter may acquire the know-
ledge of the Omnicient, All-pervading and True Supreme Soul.
