atheists." This article is included in this compilation as annexure I. It
helps us in understanding the impact on him of his visit to Ajmer for
the
antim darshanas
of the great Rishi Dayananda Saraswati in October
1883 because his ideas on this subject then underwent a sea change.
Guru Datta's works in the form of books were first published by Master
Durga Prasad at his Virjanand Press. On the occasion of The World
Religion Meet, two of his books,
'Commentary
on Upanishads' and
'Evidences of Human Spirit' were sent to Chicago. There the books
received much praise and an American gentleman published their
'Chicago Edition'. Pandit Guru Datta, at times spoke of visiting America
himself. But that was not to be, for death as ever, proved mightier than
dreams. Pandit Guru Datta Vidyarthi died at the age of 26, in 1890.
Only if Guru Datta had been able to participate in World Religion
Conference, his fame and glory would have been unparalleled. He
would have established himself among the foremost thinkers of the
world. His dream of
Krinvanto Vishwaniaryam
would have been
realised. The Vedic flag would have conquered all. The Chicago
Editions were also published by Virjanand Press, under the auspices
of the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, Lahore. Vedic Text - No. 3, was published
by Swami Brahmanand Saraswati in 1894 at G. P. Verma & Bros. Press,
Lucknow. The reply on Niyoga was published by The Aryan Tract
Society, Lahore at Virjanand Press in 1890. 'Three Upanishads With
Commentary', edited by Swami Vedanand Tirth was brought out by
Rajpal & Sons, Lahore. Nearly two decades ago, Pandit Om Prakash,
Vedic Missionary of Jallandhar (later 'Carnal) published a few of Guru
Datta's books at Jallandhar. These are
Pecuniomania, The Realities of
Inner Lift,
and
Commentary on Upanishads
(Ish and Mandukya). These
editions, however, bear no date of publication.
Not only have the books been published individually, but the
collected works of Guru Datta have also been brought out from
time to time. The first publication of his collected works was
undertaken by his friend Lala Jivan Das, Pensioner who had been
the Vice-President of Arya Samaj, Lahore. The text of the compilation
was based on the manuscripts and the books published during Guru
Datta's lifetime. This publication titled,
Works of Late Pandit Guru Datta
Vidyarthi, M. A.,
Part I, was brought out by Aryan Printing, Publishing
Sr
General Trading Company, Lahore. Its first edition was published
in October 1897 with two revised editions coming out in 1902 and 1912.
