It is well known that the ascetic Vajshrava's son (Uddalak),
desiring
moksha
(emancipation), gifted (in performance of sac-
reficial acts) all his wealth to the learned. He had a son, named
Nachiketa.

(2) As the said gifts were being taken away by the learned
Brahmans, Nachiketa, who was yet a boy of tender age, enter-
tained faith and he began thinking thus :
