through Virjanand Yantralaya Lahore in 1889. He entertained the large
audience assembled on October 12, to celebrate the seventh anniversary
of Peshawar Arya Samaj with the singing of a few mantras of the Holy
Samveda
in the most melodious and agreeable manner.

33. One of the most important contributions of Guru Datta was opening of
Ashtadhyayi
and
Updeshak
classes. This movement generated lot of
interest and heat as is evident from the writings in
Satdharam pracharak
and other magazines.
34. The two Swamis were Swatmananda (and not Achutananda) and
Prakashananda. Swami Achutananda was Guru Datta's staunch
follower (see Ram Prakash, Pandit Guru Datta Vidyarthi, pp.81-85).

39. Arya Patrika, March 25,1890. His death evoked universal regret for his
was a life of splendid promise. Sir Syad Ahmad Khan wrote in an
obituary note:-"Pity, hundreds of pities that such a man died of
consumption at the age of 26....The national calamity, particularly the
loss of Arya Samaj can not be undone". The True light, a Christian paper
'deeply regretted his death as a public loss', and further remarked that
"he was a most laborious, earnest student, and exceptionally well-
informed on the questions of the day....His general manner, amiable
disposition and upright life endeared him to very many". The Tribune
of the 19th March, 1890, observed that "the cruel hand of death has
snatched away another of the Punjab's most promising sons". Again,
in the issue of 22nd , it observed, "He was the most eloquent and
effective Punjabi speaker, both in English and Hindi.... His character was
specklessly pure and his mode of life simple even to austerity".
