16. Guru Datta Vidyarthi, Narendra Nath, Hans Raj, Nihal Chand and
Chetanand stood first, second, third, fourth and fifth respectively (The
Tribune, June 20, 1885).
17. This speech was delivered at the annual function of Arya Samaj,

19. Pandit Lekh Ram Arya Mussafir was the President of the Ferozepur
Arya Samaj.
20. This refers to his speech delivered on October 7, 1886 at the ninth
annual function of the Amritsar Arya Samaj.
21. He did his M.A. in Natural Sciences in 1886. Even Science graduates and
post-graduates were awarded B.A. and M.A. (and not B.Sc. and M.Sc.)
degrees respectively during those days.
22. After Sir J.C.Bose (then B.Sc. from London), Guru Datta Vidyarthi
was perhaps the first Indian to be appointed Assistant Professor in a
Science subject. Even Acharya P.C.Ray was appointed temporary
Assistant Professor much latter in 1889. It may also be noted that he
was asked by the Senate of the Punjab University, Lahore if he was
willing to be recommended for the examination for a post of Extra
Assistant Commissioner. The post then carried a pay scale of Rs. 250
- 800. But Guru Datta declined the offer as he considered it to be a

23. Pandit Guru Datta Vidyarthi was the founder member of the DAV
College Trust and Managing Society. He was appointed member of
the school Sub-Committee in June 1886, Joint Secretary in December
1886, Assistant Secretary in 1887-88 and Secretary of the College
Committee in 1888- 89.

Oudh during 1902-47 and as N.W. Provinces and Oudh before 1902.
