14. A person who takes care only of the body and not of
the mind, is imperfect. There is a difference between
the brain and the mind. Mind works through the brain,
but is more delicate than the brain. The mind thinks,
feels, desires, hates, remembers, argues, knows good
and evil, and makes a person of good character. It can
make a person of bad character, also by leading on an
adverse path. The thinner part of the mind is called
intellect, and it leads a person to a pious path. The
unclean part of the mind is not far-seeing. It wants
instant joy and happiness. To get up early in the
morning is good for health. The mind will say why
leave the pleasure of sleep at this hour. But the intellect
says that bearing a little trouble now, will bestow
greater happiness later on. He will get up. Similarly
the intellect shows the way on every subject. These
individuals turn into men of good character.
Those who obey the mind fall down in estimation. In
Bhagwad Gita, Lord Krishna has termed the body like a
Chariot, whose owner is soul and its horses are five organs
of sense (eye, nose, ear, tongue and skin) along with five
organs of deed (hand, foot, mouth, organs of urine &
stools). The intellect by becoming the charioteer, is driving
these horses with the rein of the mind. But if the intellect
loosens the rein, the horses will ruin the chariot by running
hither and thither. If the intellect tightens the rein of mind,
the horses will reach the destination.
